Ahhh... glad to hear that you guys got one of those magnetic tachs. That was my biggest frustration with the whole thing over the past couple years!! Remember when the fat guy revved that Shadow 750 so high it was backfiring? "FAIL" Huh??!! It's a STOCK Honda Shadow for petes' sake!! "Nope... you fail".
At the Bit TUV station, the inspectors had thier dB meter actually taped/mounted to a meter stick, ensuring proper measurement from the pipes, to include the angle and height from the gound. _________________ 2003 Heritage Classic

I remember that one. I thinks he gets a kick out of it. Also keep the tach in the office. I had asked the boss to buy it, so inspections would be fair to all riders. I think he doesn't like motorcycles but i know he owns a scooter. Go figure that. I usually do the bike inspections now or make it a point to so we all have fair justice. My boss caught him doing them wrong and jumped on him about it. Hopefully he has learned or he'll have more counceling. My boss also talked about putting in a pole and maked off area there with the 101db readings posted. I might try and put that into works also. _________________ Albert J Klaver Jr

I recenty bought a db meter (Mastech digital sound level meter, JTS 1357). I haven't used it yet, but anyone is free to use it. Just let me know. I want to see what my new pipes are reading. I'll let you know how the meter works when I do. I'm scared to find out. Ben, I noticed you said an 06/07 bike doesn't have to be inspected. When I registered my 07 bike, they told me, even though it's brand new, it has to be inspected. They go by current year and past year now, which would be 08/09 year bikes. Sucks. The bike inspection regulation also states, that if the bike has stock pipes on it, it's at the discretion of the inspector to check the db rate. They failed my Ducati with stock pipes when I first got here last year. _________________ Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

Ha! Go back and look at that post you're quoting me on. I originally posted that in '07 So yea, you're absolutely right about the time frame you're allowed to not need the inspection. A 2 year old bike requires inspection.
I hadn't heard your stock Duc failed. That is the exact reason I bumped this thread. Another reason why it's smart to pay attention to this club and this website. The info everyone can learn from each other..... If any of ya'll have trouble passing the inspection, do your homework..... and go see HarleyMan at the inspection station! _________________ 2003 Heritage Classic

Yeah, I have a bad habit of not checking the post dates. All in all, still good info. _________________ Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

Sorry for the rant, but need to vent a little...
So I take my bike (Kawasaki 1500 Cruiser) to get tested and they said it was at 118...not too shocked, since it had drag pipes. I found a set of stock pipes online and ordered them, but my temp tags were running out so I decided to try something. I put some home-made baffles in and they measured it at 105. Figured I was close, so I went back home, put a second set of baffles in and took it back to the inspection station. I watched as he reved it and the meter read 99. Great! Then he cranked it to near redline until it hit 109 and said it failed....how could MORE baffling make it louder. For the last test, I asked 3 times for them to use the external tach since I thought he was over-reving it (same guy who had failed me earlier) and he refused, saying it would still be too loud. So now my bike is non-op while I wait on the stock pipes to arrive. But I am wondering who the inspectors report to. If they refuse to follow their own regulations, who can be called to force them to. I know this could be dangerous territory, since a lot of the inspection is subjective...is that water from a puddle on the bottom of your car....well I think it's a)oil b)brake fluid c)steering fluid, so you fail. But if you go to anyplace else on base and ask someone to do something by the TO or reg and they refuse there is some recourse.
<Rant off>
Also, if Spankee, or anyone else with a dB meter is still around, I'd like to get some independent readings or opinions on the sound level. Thanks! |

No problem on the rant.
The inspection place reports and is part of 52 Trans, you can go to the chief of trans and file a report. In the past the chief even had to go over and order the inspectors to follow the rules. Another thang you can do it go to the TUV inpsecting place in BNitburg and have them do the exhaust db and take that report to the chief of trans. Ou old President had this same problem. Do you have a copy of the motorcycle cheat sheet, it states the regs on how they are required to conduct the tests. If they give you any trouble tell them you want there supervisor to report to the inspection station and you willn't leave untill he does.
As far as a db meter, the auto hobby shop has one for the motorcycle people. You may have to rent the stall for $3 to get to use the motorcycle tools though. _________________ 2007 Harley Touring FLHTCU "103"

The Ramstein folks told me to take mine to Weisbaden next time I need my bike inspected. I guess they are a little more passive when it comes to the inspections. Lord knows I'm going to need all the help I can get for my bike. If you need a db guage, I have a brand new one that I haven't tested out yet. Just let me know and I can bring it in. _________________ Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

VulcanRider: you need to educate yourself on the USAREUR 190-1 checklist. This is the document all vehicle insp stations use when inspecting bikes/vehicles. Read the fine print and you'll see that it points you to the ECE instructions when checking bikes. There is a specific technique the inspectors are supposed to use when checking dB. The best thing you can do is make yourself smart on how it's supposed to be done.
Yea... I don't miss all that BS. I did A LOT of reading into it and raised the BS flag all the way to USAFE when I was there. Good Luck!! _________________ 2003 Heritage Classic

Got to say, this year was a lot different than previous years... Got my ride inspected yesterday. Of course i put my stock pipes on for the inspection...He(fatguy) looked it over, checked blinkers, tires...told me to start it, blipped the throttle (maybe 2K rpm's), told me to shut it off(no Db meter, no Tach...). Went inside stamped my paperwork. All done in under 60 seconds.
Got to say, that was the easiest inspection I have ever done with this bike. Maybe he is just tired of failing dudes...hahaha. Not gonna argue w/him, took my paperwork, said thanks and ran as fast as I could to get my plates. Oh ya, inspection place is open till 1615, got my bike inspected at 1600...registration office closes at 1530...WTF! I guess i will put my pipes back on then ride to the base for the plates today.

Hey, a new guy in my office has a 03-04ish road king with aftermarket slip ons. anyone know where he could borrow a pair of stock for the inspection?
For that matter anyone know where i could get a good price on some simple slip ons for my 08 Fatboy? I'm gonna wait till i get back to the states and get proper pipes, but ii like the sound of slip ons fine. a little grumble to my bear of a bike would be nice. feels like he's got a muzzle on now. _________________ KC
